The Great Men of the Earth

Well, I may not have posted lately but that does not mean my cranium is on vacation. I have been pondering many things relative to the times. O the times…

Revelation 18 has always been an endless source of pondering for me. The huge money system that the Lord of the Universe will judge in the end days is nearly upon us, if not at least building like an iceberg. In this chapter we see listed an abundance of material goods that we simply take for granted, and with the holiday shopping season about to seize our souls, who could not see that the materialism of this day and age is exhorbitant and unending? Well, in Revelation 18:23, something really jumped out at me recently, say all you want about being ‘relevant’ today, the church can keep their relevancy in regards to programs and body counts, just give me the ‘relevancy’ of Bible prophecy any day.

Revelation 18:23 says, “for your merchants were the great men of the earth…” . Since when is that true?

I can’t imagine a time in history when merchants were anything but the corner store, the humble shopkeeper. And so I can scarcely imagine them as being great men in the earth, as far as power over other men goes. The king, the philosopher, the politician, the priest maybe; but the blacksmith? The butcher, baker, candlestick maker? This would have been inconceivable in my parent’s and grandparents’ days. Today, multi-national corporations, unaccountable securities dealers, Wall Street power brokers and special interest lobbying groups, those are truly what make the world go ’round, and once again the Bible speaks into our day. Think about it: since the days of Jekyll Island when the most obscenely rich met year after year to map out our nations’ financial future, (19th century – early 20th century) we have seen the power base of multi-millionaires grow and grow by the year. And think about this: as wealthy as the Rockefellers and Carnegies were at the time, even they did not have indoor plumbing, automobiles, computers or movie screens in their homes, and they were not even able to fly across the continents, so also consider the notion that many of us in our day are even richer than they were, relatively speaking, and don’t even realize it. No wonder God will judge this system that has so captured men’s hearts and caused them to sell their souls for the next toy or gadget.

The Bible is the only book that can tell us the end from the beginning, and be 100% right. If it were not that accurate, no one would have cause to put any faith in what it says. But since it never misses, Wall Street would do well to heed its warnings.

Maranatha!

About Mary

I have been a believer since 1981. Everything else before that is relatively meaningless. My heart has, from day 1, always been toward the subject of bible prophecy and I have seen the Lord do amazing things in my life through simply studying the Word and applying it to my life. I am a wife, grandmother and work full time in ministry. Life is full, and full of learning curves and seasons.
